Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:

My Mum and Dad met at a dance hall when they were teenagers so it was a terrible blow when my Mum was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her thirties; as her condition deteriorated, my Dad’s role as carer grew until Mum died when she was 68. Dad had a huge gap in his life which he tried to come to terms with, but, just 4 years later, the smoking which had seemed so cool in his youth caught up with him and he was told he’d got lung cancer.

Suddenly, the family became carers. My family lived and worked nearby so I was at my Dad’s house at lunchtime, teatime and evenings most days; my teenage sons took turns to help him to bed, sometimes talking or watching blokey films long into the night and my daughter cooked for him and visited between college lectures. My sister and her family were there weekends and we were all supported by professional carers, Crossroads and the Health Service. It was a crazy time. I would come home eventually, exhausted physically and emotionally, have a good cry then bash hell out of the piano which helped my frustrations -  I so wanted it all to end but there was only one way that was going to happen and I didn’t want that. We had lots of laughter and my Dad said that he’d come to know each of us better as individuals which was lovely. It was so hard but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

Our caring lasted about 10 months but other carers do it for 10, 20, 30 years, sometimes caring for more than one person; sometimes the caring role is thrust upon you, sometimes it creeps up and suddenly realise you’re a carer . Money is tight, keeping a job is a struggle, relationships are  strained to the limit, friends and social life disappear, the toll taken by stress and sheer physical effort is gargantuan and the carers’ world gets smaller and smaller until …….one day the caring is over - but then what do you do?

They say that 3 out of 5 of us will be carers at some time in our lives so this Carers’ Week it’s as well for all of us to celebrate, support and promote the carers’ cause. Its time to care for the carers!
