Pause For Thought
From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:
Given that I have my beloved east end of London written right through me like a stick of rock, it might surprise you, Chris, to hear that I’m a member of the Women’s Institute!. Its roots and origins are a bit rural for me; I think it’ll be a while before I crochet a Victoria sponge and I do glaze over a bit when the discussion turns to gardening and bee-keeping but there are other things too. We have heard some really great speakers, one was a stunt woman, that was scary!, and another lady taught us how to dance the Flamenco – Ole! And there are always nice cakes in the break and lots of laughs!
And although I’m passionate about inclusion, I believe that there are times when it’s good to have separate groups for women, or men, or people with particular interests, so that members can understand, support and encourage each other. And whether that’s the WI, the Mother’s Union or the Townswomen’s Guild – to name but a few! – I believe that the effect of groups of women working together like that is beneficial to the whole community and, as part of our work, our branch supports a number of other women’s groups locally and abroad.
There’s a lot of interest in the WI just now because this year marks its centenary and our branch has decided to mark it by putting together a booklet of hints and tips for life. I thought long and hard about my contribution; should it be the true East End ‘Never pay full price for anything’ or ‘you’re all right as long as you’re one of us’?
But, in the end, I decided to write ‘When in doubt, do it!’ because the things I regret, mostly, are those things I haven’t done, the opportunities I didn’t grasp. If my Christian faith means anything, it means that I can put aside fear, take a deep breath and give a little push on some of those doors that God puts in front of me.Â
