Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Abdul-Rehman Malik, journalist and broadcaster

I probably speak for many people Chris, when I say I have a love-hate relationship with reality TV. The airwaves seem overrun with the lurid antics of some over-tanned, angst ridden, pheromone-crazed group or another looking for love and success often in the wrong places. It all seems a far cry from Dom鈥檚 classic slapstick 鈥渢rigger happy鈥 capers, which I still find myself chuckling to after all these years.

Now Emma, I won鈥檛 deny blubbering away as you鈥檝e interviewed a Voice contestant who鈥檚 given the performance of her life 鈥 and I would be lying if I said I never voted for my favourite performance, but more often than not, authenticity feels crowded out by bling and bombast.聽

So, it鈥檚 hard to believe that it was 59 years ago today that Elvis Presley caused the first real scandal of the television era. Appearing on the popular Milton Berle show, Elvis wildly shook him hips to hit song 鈥淗ound Dog鈥. Today, Elvis鈥 pelvic gyrations would be considered tame, but in 1956 they were scandalous.

The 17th century Punjabi mystic Sultan Bahu warned against giving into that part of our self that calls us to be greedy and spiteful. 鈥淭hat stubborn ego,鈥 he said, 鈥渋s like a disagreeable dog that howls and screams without end.鈥

It sounds like that no-good, 鈥渃ryin鈥 all the time鈥 hound dog that Elvis was crooning about. Could Elvis鈥 groovy moves have been his interpretation of what happens when we let that stubborn dog get the better of us? I鈥檇 like to think so.

There is another dog allegory that I love. The Sufi Master Shibli was once asked who showed him the path to God. I once saw a very thirsty dog, he said, standing at the edge of pond, but it refused to go in because it saw it鈥檚 own reflection and thought that an equally thirsty dog had gotten there first. Finally, no longer being able to endure its thirst, the dog jumped in and it found it had the water all to itself. That dog was my first teacher, Shibli said, because it taught me to be fearless and jump in to this God-given river called life.

Now, if I can get that stubborn ego under control, that鈥檚 the kind of leap into reality, I think I鈥檇 like to take.
