Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

Last Saturday, our weekly bible reading, from the book of Numbers, contained the priestly benediction - May God bless you and keep you, May God’s face shine upon you and be gracious to you, May God’s presence turn towards you and give you peace. You hear it frequently in many different places. Indeed, at a big memorial service last week, many people there - who weren’t Jewish - said they hadn’t realised we used the Christian blessing. My reply was that we had it first! In fact, it’s the oldest Biblical text found so far by archaeologists. Amulets containing these verses have been found in graves going back to the First Temple Period, before 586 BCE. We Jews often recite it at the end of services. More traditional Jews ask people allegedly descended from the priestly caste, often called Cohen - which means priest in Hebrew - to recite the blessing for the congregation, with their arms raised.

So I felt like asking my congregation what sounds like a riddle - what links Star Trek, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen? Leonard Nimoy used a single-handed version of the traditional arm raising by the priestly caste in Judaism to create the Vulcan salute for Spock on Star Trek. While attending services as a child, he peeked from under his father's prayer shawl and saw the gesture. Meanwhile Bob Dylan's song, "Forever Young", from the Planet Waves album, uses part of the priestly blessings. And Leonard Cohen occasionally used it at the end of concerts. So it’s not just an ancient blessing, nor indeed only Jewish. It’s part of popular culture. But just because it’s part of Star Trek doesn’t mean we don’t have to think about it. For the blessing takes us on a journey. From being blessed and preserved in this world we go to a plea for grace, and graciousness, the stuff that makes life worth living. The last part gives us the chance to encounter God’s presence - and to gain peace. Amen to that - for that desire for peace unites us all.
