Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:

If I’d known it was Pie Day today, I’d have brought you a rabbit pie back from Malta – rabbit and pea; rabbit and mushroom – you name it, they put it in a pie with rabbit!

We were there in Malta for a week and had a lovely rest though you’ll see I’m more rusty than sunburnt because it absolutely poured with rain every day! But the people are so nice and friendly and they drive on the left, so that helps! And the goodness that I didn’t get from the sun, I made up for in delicious food and a very nice Maltese rose!

I took all my usual stuff,  some comfortable clothes and so on, but I didn’t take any makeup or jewellery – although I love getting glammed up when I’m working, I like to leave all that behind when I go on holiday - much to my daughter’s distress.

And I never, ever take a watch on holiday. Not because I hope to miss the plane home but because I like to have a complete break from the clockwatching that is the backbone of my life. When I’m working, I look at the clock constantly - and it’s almost always later than I wanted it to be. I hate to be late – but I’m often only just in time, as the funeral directors of East London will tell you – it was suggested that I should have a purple flashing light fitted to my car but I haven’t gone that far yet! But Church services and community meetings need to begin on time and I don’t like to waste my time or anyone else’s, so life does tend to be a bit of a dash.

To be on holiday for me then, is to relax into the moment and not to worry about the next one, and, in that way, I believe that holidays are a little foretaste of Heaven;the Bible says that, to God, a thousand years is like an evening – so no need to rush then!  Talking of a foretaste of heaven – are there any of those pies left?
