Pause For Thought
From Revβd Richard Coles, cleric and broadcaster:
βYou only do it for the dressing upβ; someone said the other day. I denied it indignantly, but as the verger pointed out later I was at the time wearing a cassock, a box pleated cotta, a gold and purple silken stole, a full length cloak and a biretta with a pom pom.
Well, Iβm not the first dressy Vicar round these parts. Since 1217 men (so far) have been robing up in my church, some in glittering chasubles, others in black gowns, some with full-bottomed wigs, others with monkβs tonsures: we all have our kit, in one way or another.
Every Sunday I stand on perhaps the dressiest of all my predecessors, buried near the altar of my church. Father Scorrer, who died in 1969, is best remembered in the village not for dressing up in church but for dressing up in panto. He was our finest Dame, and appeared, year after year, at the Star Hall, our Parish Temperance Theatre. His Twankey, still talked about, set a standard very difficult to beat.
Nevertheless, ever since Vicars have followed him on to the stage, in my own time not as Dame β thatβs a part more often taken by the builder Mr Forster, my Churchwarden β but in the much anticipated Act II ultra violet dance number. Partly this is because itβs good for Vicars to get stuck in, partly because it is better to make of a fool of yourself before somebody else does β but partly, I think, because dressing up is important. It distances us from ourselves, it focuses the attention of the crowd, it enables us to say things that might otherwise be unsayable. "Give a man a mask, and he will tell you the truth," said Oscar Wilde, who knew a thing or two about dressing up.Β
