Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

I鈥檝e been to a physio for the first time. I'd always thought the physio was for sudden injuries, like football strikers鈥 dodgy ankles, or pop stars falling off stages after cape malfunctions. Mine was a creeping knee pain, steadily worse over a couple of years.

A chance comment from a pal recommended I try and get seen. Sometimes we don鈥檛 notice the thing about us that needs fixing; it takes friendly encouragement to make us take action, on the slow-creeping problems in our lives.

The physio asked what I did for a living. 鈥淪tand-up comedy,鈥 I replied. 鈥淥h,鈥 she said. 鈥淭hat explains it. You鈥檝e got 鈥楽tand-Up鈥檚 Knee鈥.鈥 So apparently that鈥檚 a thing.

鈥淎re you a static stand-up?鈥 she asked. 鈥淥r do you skip around like Michael McIntyre?鈥 I鈥檓 quite still, I replied. 鈥淥h,鈥 she said. 鈥淵ou should skip around like Michael McIntyre.鈥

Everyone鈥檚 a critic. She said if I wanted, at the next session she鈥檇 put some ultra-tough sticky tape on the backs of my knees, so they couldn鈥檛 lock straight. 鈥淪have your leg-hairs though,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 heavy-duty tape.鈥

So I shaved my legs, with my wife鈥檚 help, who brought out a razor with glee. I survived and returned to the physio for the knee-tape. She asked if I'd shaved my leg-hairs; I said yes and dropped trouser. 鈥淥h! Your legs are entirely shaved!鈥, she exclaimed, holding the world鈥檚 smallest piece of tape. A couple of centimetres!聽 My shaved legs were unnecessary!聽聽 In physio, a little tape goes a long way.

The same鈥檚 true of encouragement. A little goes far. There鈥檚 a biblical proverb: 鈥淎 word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.鈥 My friend鈥檚 small encouragement ensured I finally noticed a gradual concern that needed fixing.

So I encourage the encouragers. When we need mending, beginning with that little piece of sticking-tape can start making things right. 聽I say this bald of leg. And my, Chris, isn鈥檛 it chilly for the time of year...
