Pause for Thought

We celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary yesterday, which means we’re getting on in years. And it made me think, as we looked back, of that wonderful poem by Laurence Binyon, ‘The Fallen’, written because he was so upset by the huge number of casualties at the beginning of World War I. Next Sunday marks 100 years since The Times first published it, and most of us will have heard it at a Remembrance Day service or seen it on war memorials worldwide:
Ìý
‘They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
Ìý
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
Ìý
ÌýAt the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them.’
Ìý
Those lines remind us all too clearly of the benefits of the life we’ve had- many years undisturbed by being called up to fight. Binyon himself was too old to fight, so he volunteered as a Red Cross Orderly instead and went to the Western Front in 1915. A Quaker, he might have been a conscientious objector. In fact, he was anything but. He survived the war, lived a normal life afterwards, and his three daughters grew old in their turn, and could look back over the years, unlike the men he wrote about.
Ìý
This Saturday night in our synagogues, we hold a service for the start of the penitential season. Though the prayers mainly ask for forgiveness, there is a theme, repeated throughout the High Holy Days, of being inscribed by God into the Book of Life for another year. Of course it’s not to be taken literally. But it’s about looking back over the past year and looking forward to the next, having tried to do better than before. Those men Laurence Binyon wrote about never had the chance to look back or forward. So, as we say our prayers on Saturday night, and throughout the High Holy Days in this centenary year after World War I, I will be remembering them, for their sacrifice, of course, but also for the opportunities they never had, the reflection they never managed. May they rest in peace.
