Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Rabbi Pete Tobias of the Liberal Synagogue, Elstree:

Ìý

Today’s the birthday of Formula One drivers Stirling Moss and Damon Hill. I’ve discovered that they both went to school in Hertfordshire – well, I knew Damon did, because he was at the same school as me, though he’s a few years younger. Of course in those days it was his Dad, Graham, who drew the attention, though I don’t recall seeing any racing car antics by him in the tree-lined drives of my schooldays…

I don’t suppose Damon will have any memory of me. But I guess we all have some kind of affinity with famous people who went to our school.

The school that Damon and I attended placed great emphasis on academic and sporting achievement. I muddled through my ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels, and once captained my House cricket team to an ignoble defeat. I remember sitting in the assembly on my final day there when the headmaster announced the names of several of my contemporaries who had gained places at Oxford and Cambridge (obviously I wasn’t one of them) and declared ‘this is what constitutes real success.’

From there I went to a House assembly, where the Housemaster listed several boys who had excelled in sporting activities (not cricket, obviously), and he, perhaps deliberately parodying the headmaster, said that this was what really constituted success.

In our 21st century, perhaps, success has become defined by wealth or celebrity status, which seems even more wrong than what I was told forty years ago. In the end, I think success can be measured by whether or not people have been encouraged to discover their potential and been given the confidence to fulfil it. It doesn’t matter whether that potential is academic or sporting, whether one becomes a Formula One racing driver, a Liberal rabbi or takes up any other occupation. The important thing surely is to be a worthy member of society, making a valuable contribution to it and being confident and happy in oneself. As the rabbis of my tradition – who were themselves teachers – said: ‘Who is wise? Someone who learns from everyone. And who is happy? Someone who is content with what they have achieved’.
