Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From comedian & writer Paul Kerensa:

One of many things I love about this show is that you never know who鈥檒l be in the studio on a Friday. Today it includes, coincidentally, my boss. When I鈥檓 not pausing for thought, I lob jokes into Lee Mack鈥檚 sitcom scripts (and mighty fine they are too 鈥 episode 3, joke 12 is a real corker, if I may say so).

So it鈥檚 nice to be almost literally rubbing shoulders with studio neighbours. Two thousand years ago, a legal expert asked a now-famous be-sandaled teacher about his greatest instructions. His greatest? Love God. And his second greatest? Love your neighbour. The lawyer asked, 鈥淲ho is my neighbour?鈥

Well here鈥檚 a fact: Brian May used to be my neighbour. A road away, in the same village. So hello!

Lee Mack, well I鈥檝e written with him for the last decade, so we were at neighbouring desks for a bit.

Roger Taylor: I was born in the next street from where I believe you grew up in Cornwall.

George Ezra: A trickier link, but those last three were pretty good. Your song 鈥楤udapest鈥 was on the EP 鈥楧id You Hear The Rain鈥... I went to Budapest once, and it was raining. So that counts.

With Geoff Boycott I was stumped. You once went 246 not out. I鈥檝e worked on Not Going Out. That鈥檒l do.

And Chris, how are you my neighbour? Well I鈥檝e got ginger hair and glasses 鈥 what more do you want?

鈥淲ho is my neighbour?鈥 Well everyone on this planet is connected. That teacher 鈥 Jesus - answered by talking about the Good Samaritan 鈥 and Samaritans were loathed at the time. The point of 鈥榣ove your neighbour鈥 is not to love our own kind, but to love the others.

At a time when the planet feels smaller than ever, yet full of more differences than ever, we could say more often: 鈥淵ou鈥檙e different from me, and I love you for it.鈥

And I鈥檒l finally add that in ten years of working with Lee Mack, that鈥檚 the longest I鈥檝e spoken without him lobbing a joke in.
