Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Canon Ann Easter, Chief Executive of a Charity and Chaplain to the Queen:

Ìý

On this day, September 16th in 1846, (168 years ago) a girl, Anna Kingsford, was born in Stratford – East, that is, just up the road to me in London – you probably won’t have heard of her but what a girl she was! Anna was described as pretty, delicate, charming, warm-heartedÌý - and dangerous! She had high ideals and an indomitable will.

Ìý

Anna published her first book when she was 13 years old and, at 21, to escape unwanted suitors, married an Anglican clergyman; they had a sort of pre-nuptial agreement which meant that Anna could pursue her own interests, have her own friends and not worry about being Mrs Vicar and that's what she did!

Ìý

With a true heart for the oppressed, Anna fought ferociously for women’s rights, especially for women to have the vote; she was a vehement vegetarian and utterly opposed to vivisection, the use of live animals in experiments. Anna Kingsford was the second woman ever to qualify as a doctor of medicine in this country and she often gave lectures and talks as well as editing a magazine – a force to be reckoned with.

Ìý

Anna's life was full to the brim with passion and commitment and it seems that she never missed an opportunity to put her point across.Ìý If she did a Pause for Thought, Chris I think she’d still be going by the start of Jeremy Vine’s Show, let alone Ken’s!Ìý She quite reminded me of the Reverend Dr Ian Paisley, who died last week and spent a lifetime telling others where they were going wrong!

Ìý

Sadly, Anna died when she was only 42 but we have commemorated this child of Newham by naming one of our secondary schools after her; there, in Beckton, east London, 1500 young women and men of all faiths, cultures, races and opinions, learn together to be lively citizens of this amazing world – the school motto is ‘Aspire. Succeed. Be excellent’

Ìý

Sentiments that Anna Kingsford would be proud of, I reckon.
