Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Μύ

I am a born optimist; and I try to find the good in everyone, and everything. I naturally look for the purpose in something; the core of wisdom to take away and learn.

Μύ

But I will confess that it is not always easy. Life sometimes throws out difficult situations which seem to go on and on. Maintaining the necessary patience, hope, and persistence over a prolonged period is definitely a test.

Μύ

My eldest daughter has been ill for almost two years. She has been in hospital for the past three months, and she’ll probably be there for at least three more. The instability produced by her illness has meant I have had to retreat from almost everything bar keeping my family strong and secure.

Μύ

β€œWhat’s the point to all this?” I ask myself.

Μύ

β€œWhy is this necessary?” I ask God.

Μύ

In my darker moments, a Shakespeare sonnet that I learned as a child has come into my head, β€œAnd trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries, and look upon myself and curse my fate.”

Μύ

Should I curse my fate? I don’t usually find that productive. I have always found it better to get on. A certain stoicism better than an excessive emotional response.

Μύ

Is heaven really deaf? I have certainly had to calm myself in order to appreciate heaven’s help: The friends who have driven 500 mile trips to be with us for an evening. The family who have dropped everything to be by our side. The doctors and nurses who have used their knowledge and skills to try to help her. The gift of faith which has been a healing for my heart my whole life. Friends, family, health professionals, faith – examples of heaven listening.

Μύ

The Qur’an reminds that God will never test a soul with more than it can bear. And knowing that has helped us accept what is happening, but it is an active, not a passive acceptance: Accepting of the situation yes; but active in striving to find a solution; active in trying to be a better person because of the circumstance.

Μύ

In the end, I have come to the conclusion that it is not the problems which are thrown at us, but how we react that is the test of who we are.

Μύ

Or as my youngest daughter likes to tell me, β€œWhen life throws you lemons, learn to make lemonade.”
