Soak
The name Soak combines 'soul' and 'folk'.
"Strange", she says, "as my music is neither." Soak/Bridie Monds-Watson was born in Belfast, but grew up in Derry.
She began her musical career playing the open mic nights at Café del Mondo, before being ‘discovered’ via the Jammhouse sofa sessions in early 2012.
Since then she has won the NI Chordblossom ‘Double A Side’ competition and gigged extensively.
Recent performances include the Jammhouse, the launch of the UK City of Culture Programme, supporting The Undertones in Belfast’s Custom House Square during the Cathedral Arts Festival, the Legenderry Clipper Festival, Glasgowbury, Linkfest, the Stendhal festival and many more.
As Stuart Bailie comments, “She manifests great talent the way that zebras wear stripes."
She helped kick off the UK City of Culture year performing at the Â鶹ԼÅÄ’s Sons & Daughters event at The Venue in January, alongside Gary Lightbody, Nadine Coyle, Neil Hannon and many others.
Kate Mossman of The Observer said that: “if she represents anything at all, it's the potential of songwriting to show the complexity of a person's inner life.
"Someone once said you can never truly know your children. If they all wrote songs like this, we would.â€
