Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) are on the case

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman embark on their second thrilling, scary, action-packed and hugely entertaining adventure as Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson.

Watson's new life is never dull – after all, he's sharing a flat with Sherlock Holmes. But solving mysteries won't pay the bills. The trouble is, though, that Sherlock's idea of a visit to the bank is not quite what Watson had in mind.

Mysterious ciphers are appearing on walls all over London and anyone who sees them is dead within hours, from the glittering financial hub of the city to the heart of a travelling Chinese circus. Sherlock and Watson must decipher the deadly symbols before anyone else falls victim to the mysterious Black Lotus.

Sherlock Holmes is played by Benedict Cumberbatch and John Watson by Martin Freeman, Mrs Hudson by Una Stubbs, Molly Hooper by Louise Brealey, DI Dimmock by Paul Chequer, Sarah by Zoe Telford, Soo Lin Yao by Gemma Chan, the opera singer by Sarah Lam and Amanda by Olivia Poulet.

Athletics – European Championships

There is full coverage of the men's marathon this morning on the final day of the European Championships. The athletes will run four 10km laps through the streets of Barcelona, with Italy's Stefano Baldini vying for an unprecedented hat-trick of European titles.

Golf – Women's British Open

Hazel Irvine introduces the climax to the fourth and final major tournament of the year on the women's tour. The world's top 10 are among the competitors vying for the prestigious trophy and Β£45,000 winner's cheque at Royal Birkdale.

Defending champion Catriona Matthew is the highest ranked Briton. She became the first Scottish woman to win a major title last year when she sank three late birdies to win the British Open by three shots. Viewers can expect more drama today on the Southport course.

Athletics – European Championships

John Inverdale introduces the final session of the championships from Barcelona. Ten more athletes will be crowned European champions of their event, with British hopes largely resting on the relay teams and women's distance runners. Commonwealth silver medallist Jo Pavey is scheduled to compete in the 5,000m, while World Championship runner-up Lisa Dobriskey leads the British contingent in the 1,500m. In the long jump, Chris Tomlinson attempts to win his first major outdoor medal after years of disappointment.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May buy old British roadsters from Jensen-Healey, Lotus and TVR before taking a wistful journey through the remnants of this country's sports-car industry, starting in Norfolk and ending up at the mothballed TVR factory in Blackpool.

Also in this show, Jeremy is on the test track in the sensational new Ferrari 458 Italia; and laid-back Hollywood legend Jeff Goldblum is the star in the new Reasonably Priced Car.
