Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE - Autumn highlights 2004

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE brings together the best of British

National events and landmark programming cover the depth and breadth of Britain this autumn in a Β£221m season as Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE asks viewers to get involved.

Μύ

In a sweeping new series for Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE, Alan Titchmarsh explores the history and geography of this country from Dorset's Jurassic Coast, to the Munroes of Scotland.

Μύ

British Isles: A Natural History celebrates the extraordinary natural history of a landscape that is littered with clues to our past and discovers the birth and evolution of the British Isles.

Μύ

Each programme features specially tailored regional opt-out segments which are supported by online Walks Through Time, local museum and wildlife events making this landmark series a truly interactive experience of the natural wonders on our very own doorsteps.

Μύ

Lorraine Heggessey, Controller Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE, said: "One of the most important things Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE can do is to give programmes a life beyond the screen, encouraging and supporting viewers who have been inspired to take things further.

Μύ

"Whether they want to lead a healthier life, find out more about Britain's countryside or debate how well prepared we are for a dirty bomb attack, Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE is the place for them."

Μύ

Rolf On Art has done much to encourage a new audience to take an interest in the arts and this season the series, which is on the grand masters, is launched with Rolf On Art - The Big Event.

Μύ

In a day designed to inspire as many people as possible to pick up a brush and give it a go, Rolf - in conjunction with the National Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery and the Campaign for Drawing - introduces television's biggest art event.

Μύ

Rolf and some of Britain's favourite artists will gather outside The National Gallery to recreate one of the nation's best-loved paintings - Constable's The Haywain.

Μύ

Each artist will contribute one piece of the whole in a race against the clock to complete a massive painting in London's Trafalgar Square in a live one hour programme.

Μύ

Rolf dishes out advice and tips on getting started while trying to make sure The Haywain gets assembled in the right order.

Μύ

The United Kingdom has got a big problem and Fat Nation - The Big Challenge is here to tackle it.

Μύ

Obesity is one of the biggest social issues facing Britain today.

Μύ

Two thirds of adults are overweight or obese. Among children, around 5% are obese, and a further 15% are overweight, and these figures rise as children get older. But there's no quick fix.

Μύ

Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ Learning launches one of the country's biggest health initiatives with a major new series on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE.

Μύ

Focusing on one street in Birmingham Fat Nation - The Big Challenge hopes to turn around the lives of the 200 residents who weigh in at a total of 11,537 kgs, and the challenge to the nation is: don't just watch, join in.

Μύ

Viewers can follow the same diet, the same fitness programme and make the same lifestyle changes as the volunteers.

Μύ

Helped and advised by a full online and interactive support network, they will share the same obstacles and achieve the same successes.

Μύ

And hopefully when the nation steps back on the scales in November, we'll see a lighter Britain which will continue the challenge over the next two years.

Μύ

In a new approach to discussing the issues at the forefront of Britain today Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE has commissioned the Drama and Current Affairs departments to join forces to co-produce Dirty War, a drama presenting a hypothetical scenario of a radiological 'dirty' bomb attack on London.

Μύ

Dirty War is a fictional drama based on extensive research into the preparations made by the UK's emergency planners, Government and the emergency services to deal with this threat.

Μύ

A live studio debate will follow this drama.

Μύ

Other highlights include:

Μύ

This A-U-T-U-M-N Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE will be launching Britain's first 'Spelling Bee', a competition to discover Britain's best orthographist.

Μύ

Hard Spell will scour schools across the country as children aged 11 to 14 compete in regional heats culminating in a nail biting television finale.

Μύ

Set against the backdrop of Victorian England's industrial north, Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage head the cast in an adaptation of Elizabeth's Gaskell's passionate love story, North And South.

Μύ

David Morrissey stars as Ripley Holden, poised to make top dollar as Blackpool reinvents itself as Las Vegas.

Μύ

Μύ

Paul Nicholls makes his debut in a leading role in A Thing Called Love, Willliam Ivory's bold and surprising modern-day tale of one man's search for true love, set in the vibrant city of Nottingham.

Μύ

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders are back for their first series in six years.

Μύ

With a mixture of their unique brand of humour, spoofs and sketches, French and Saunders includes Dawn and Jennifer's take on some recent blockbusters, including Cold Mountain, The Passion of Christ and Girl With A Pearl Earring.

Μύ

Neil Morrissey is back on Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ ONE as part-time cabbie Barry, with Claire Rushbrook as his wife Carrie and Mark Williams as his best mate Kirk.

Μύ

Candid, warm and funny, Carrie And Barry is a new comedy series about a modern-day couple dealing with the ordinary things in life: sex, work, friendships, fantasies and step-children.
