Graphic: This wind-driven raft can be made in a day
For something different to do make your own raft to sail on a boating pond. It can be blown along by the wind. Ship ahoy! Ask a grown-up to help you with sharp tools if you need to.

Step 4
Cut a length of string and tie it to the end of one pair of rods. Place the rods over the top of the rows of corks at one end.

Tie the four pairs of rods to the cork base

Now take the string underneath the first row, up and over the rods, then under the second row. Make sure the string is kept tight as you carry on weaving the string in this way.

When you reach the end of the last row, tie off the ends of the string. Repeat this four times so that four sets of rod are tied to the rows of corks at regular points.

Step 5
Take a skewer and place it pointed end down into the middle of one of the rows of rods, second from the end of the raft. Push it through the two sticks and two pieces of string.

Step 6
To make the sail cut out a piece of card 12 cm by 15cm.

Make two small parallel slits that allow you to slide the sail onto the mast. These need to be down the middle of the long side of your piece of card. Make each slit about 3cm from the edge.

Finally make a small double triangle to make a little flag for the top of the mast.

Now you can go and sail!
