Review: The Inventors by Alexander Gordon Smith and Jamie Webb

Norwich author Jamie Webb - who is just 11 - brought out his first book earlier this year, written with his half-brother Alexander Gordon Smith.

The Inventors is a tale of great ideas coming together but there's also an evil inventor who has plans for his prize-winning students. Lydia - who is 11 - tells us what she thinks of the story.

Norwich schoolboy Jamie Webb is one of the youngest authors to see his name on the front cover of a published book.

The 11-year-old penned The Inventors with his older half-brother, writer Alexander Gordon Smith, and came up with many of the ideas for the story.

Jamie had quite a few late nights working on the tale - which hit the book shelves in April 2007.

When the story was finished Jamie's mum made him go to bed early for a week to catch up on all the sleep he missed!

Lydia, who's 11, reveals what she thinks of The Inventors.

I would definitely recommend this book! It's really exiting. When you finish a chapter you just want to carry on reading!

The book, as the name suggests, is about two young inventors called Nate and Cat.

They are school friends who have loved inventing gadgets ever since they were babies and their unusual hobby keeps getting them into trouble.

The book begins with Nate’s failed attempt to build a device to help humans get dressed.

He ends up wrecking his bedroom and pulling down the plaster from the walls. His dad was so cross that no words could come out of his mouth.

Bully's blue cakes

My favourite part was when Nate and Cat made cakes that contained a mixture that turned you blue when you ate them.

They tried to give them to the school bully but the head teacher confiscated them and ate them himself not realising that his face would turn blue overnight! That served him right! But that was just the funny beginning!

Nasty inventor

Shortly after the blue cake disaster, the real adventure and mystery starts.

Nate and Cat find themselves in the middle of a plot hatched by a completely evil and bonkers inventor named Ebenezer Lucian Saint.

Nate and Cat have to try and save the world accompanied by a malfunctioning robot who has no social graces.

I’m not going to tell you any more, you’ll have to read this great adventure for yourself to find out what happens in the end.

This book is one of the best I’ve ever read. I just can’t believe that an 11-year-old and someone who says he is rubbish at inventing could help create such a fantastic story!

The Inventors is published by Faber And Faber and is suitable for children aged 10 and above.
