Clwyd West stretches along the north Wales coast taking in the resort towns of Colwyn Bay and Abergele.
A significant number of those living in this area have moved from Merseyside and the north west of England. In contrast it also takes in a rural hinterland, which includes the historic town of Ruthin which has a large number of Welsh speakers. It performs strongly on a number of economic indicators with both unemployment and inactivity levels below the Welsh average. Labour's Alun Pugh held the seat for the first eight years of the assembly. He was beaten by Conservative Darren Millar in 2007, who went on to increase his majority at the last election in 2011.
