  1. Heritage buses will not run on weekdayspublished at 16:14 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2019

    Bus

Heritage buses running along part of route 15 will only be available on weekends from March onward, it has emerged.

Geoff Hobbs, for TfL, said: “The heritage buses running along part of route 15 provide a tourist attraction that celebrates London’s transport heritage, but its use is low and the subsidy required makes it an inefficient use of Londoners’ fares.

“The few customers who use it, and the high running costs, mean that every passenger journey actually costs us £9.

"With other buses running parallel that are fully-accessible and meet customer demand this is not a prudent use of money that could otherwise be invested in increasing the availability of buses elsewhere.

“As a result, we plan to run heritage buses only at weekends and on public holidays over the summer months when the demand for the service is highest.

"This will also improve emissions while helping to reduce congestion caused by buses along some of London’s busiest roads.”

West Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq is set to become the first member of Parliament to vote with a proxy.

MPs have welcomed the approval of a year-long trial for proxy voting for those on baby leave - with one saying the idea moved Parliament "a little closer to the 21st Century".

The issue has been raised several times in the Commons and was highlighted when Ms Siddiq postponed her Caesarean section so she could be wheeled into the chamber to vote on Theresa May's Brexit deal earlier this month.

Members of the House of Commons currently vote by going into one of two rooms at the end of the Chamber.

If members cannot get onto the estate to vote, they can enter into an informal agreement with a member of the opposing side who opts not to vote, known as pairing.

But, last summer this system was put under scrutiny when Lib Dem Jo Swinson was denied a vote when the Government broke a pairing arrangement when she was heavily pregnant.

The pilot is expected to be in place in time for the crunch Brexit votes on Tuesday night, and the approval of the the pilot scheme was greeted with applause in the chamber on Monday evening.

Ms Siddiq is due to be the first person to benefit from the trial, with a proxy set to be nominated for her as she remains on maternity leave after giving birth to son Raphael.

The number of "county lines" - where city-based gangs exploit young people as drug runners to smaller towns - is rapidly expanding, police say.

The National Crime Agency believes there are are around 1,000 criminal networks operating more than 2,000 county lines across the UK - up from 720 a year ago.

Gangs in 23 police force areas were now involved, the agency said.

Most of the vulnerable people exploited were children aged 15-17.

"County lines" is a tactic whereby gangs in places such as London, Liverpool and Birmingham introduce untraceable phones to a different area to sell drugs at street level. Local runners - often teenagers - are used to transport the drugs.

  11. Rail user satisfaction at 10-year lowpublished at 11:13 Greenwich Mean Time 29 January 2019

    Rail passengersImage source, PA

Passenger satisfaction with rail services has fallen to a 10-year low, according to the independent transport watchdog, Transport Focus.

A survey of 25,000 people found 79% were satisfied overall with services, the lowest since 2008, with more than one in five passengers not satisfied.

Worsening punctuality, last summer's timetable chaos and strikes are among the reasons for the fall.

Northern Rail and Great Northern saw the biggest drops in satisfaction.

Comparing autumn 2018 with autumn 2017, two of the 25 train operating companies (TOCs), Heathrow Express and Chiltern Railways, "significantly improved".

But over the same period seven operators "significantly declined": Great Northern, Northern, TransPennine Express, Greater Anglia, Thameslink, ScotRail and London North Eastern Railway.
