  1. Warwickshire battle back against champions Surrey

    Warwickshire are 275-8 against the reigning county champions Surrey entering the second day of their Division One game.

    Fast bowlers Liam Norwell (pictured) and Henry Brookes have shared an unbroken ninth wicket stand of 89 at Edgbaston yesterday. The Bears had slumped to 186-8, but Norwell slammed 58 and Brookes made 35.

    Meanwhile, Worcestershire are 64-3, replying to Middlesex's first innings total of 221 at New Road in their Division Two match.

    Pears paceman Charlie Morris, the leading wicket-taker in the division, claimed 3-53 to take his season's total to 23.

  2. Three questioned in murder investigation

    Police officers are continuing to question three men from Kidderminster over the death of a man whose body was found in the town last week.

    They were called to a house in Broad Street on Thursday night.

    The three men, aged 27, 28 and 61, were arrested on suspicion of murder.

    A 48-year-old man arrested last week has been released without charge.

    The dead man is thought to be in his 40s.

  3. Tom Watson: Labour Brexit referendum confusion cost votes

    Labour deputy leader and West Bromwich East MP Tom Watson has said his party lost "many hundreds of thousands" of potential votes in the EU elections because of its Brexit stance.

    He argued that confusion over holding a referendum on any deal had led to "electoral catastrophe", after Labour's share of the vote fell to 14%.

    But he welcomed leader Jeremy Corbyn saying the party was "ready to support a public vote on any deal".

    Several senior figures criticised Labour's position for lacking clarity.

  4. Council bosses work on A5 dual carriageway plans

    Council bosses in Shropshire are working with the Welsh Assembly on plans to turn the A5 around Oswestry into a dual carriageway.

    Shropshire Council’s leader, Peter Nutting, said he was "absolutely confident" the dualling of the road between Montford Bridge and Ruabon would go ahead.

    He is working with colleagues on the Welsh side of the border on the plans, with the Assembly keen to bring economic benefits to both sides of the border.

    Mr Nutting said he was delighted full council signed off the government’s £54.4m funding for the Shrewsbury North West Relief Road last week.

    And he said once that had been agreed and work had begun, attention would turn fully to the dualling project. It is the only section of the A5, which runs between London and Holyhead, to be single carriageway.

  5. Building work starts on new Birmingham ward complex

    Building work has begun on a new ward complex at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham.

    The expansion will provide four new operating theatres and a 23-bed ward.

    It'll allow up to 2,500 more patients to be treated each year and create up to 130 extra jobs, according to the hospital. The first phase of building is due to be completed by January next year.

    Women given faulty breast implants fear thousands of them may have to pay back compensation after visits by bailiffs warning them of legal proceedings.

    German safety body TUV Rheinland was in 2017 found liable over the global PIP implant scandal and ordered to make the payouts to victims by a French court.

    The firm has begun an appeal and some 13,000 victims awarded compensation have been issued legal papers.

    TUV Rheinland said it had been forced to send papers directly to victims' homes as the legal team representing them had failed to register with the court, in compliance with French law.

  9. Promoted Aston Villa players 'magnificent'

    Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith says he can't give the team "enough credit", after they secured promotion to the Premier League.

    Smith was speaking after Villa beat Derby 2-1 at Wembley in the Championship play-off final.

    The boyhood Villa fan said: "The emotions came when I saw my family crying in the stands. It was a life-changing decision for me to come to this club."

    Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn were on target for Smith's side.

    These players have been magnificent from the first day I came in. I can't give them enough credit, the quality that they've got, the work ethic, and you can see the team spirit there. I always felt and I spoke to JT and Richard (management team John Terry and Richard O'Kelly)... if Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings played well, we would win. They are that good."
