New Order or Oasis - Who's the best?

New Order and Oasis - Who's the best?
Oasis are out on tour, as big and bad as ever (if Liam's ruck is anything to go by, anyway) and New Order have just released Retro, a four disc box set of their best material, so we were wondering, who's the best?

There's no denying that they are both giants of Mancunian (and, indeed, global) music, both have had huge success and critical acclaim, but are Oasis top dogs or are New Order the bee's knees?

Should Oasis live forever or are New Order here to stay? Oasis or New Order - who's the best?

Have your say here!

From Vicky in Stockport
NEW ORDER - no contest!

From Simon in Brussels
New Order/Joy Division is the closest thing Manchester has had to a band the same stature as the Beatles. Oasis just ripped the Beatles off. It's guitar good rock music but that's all. Besides the Stone Roses had a role to play in the Oasis story.

From daly in newcastle
slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball....? what's all that about??? Listening to joy division now, still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up..NO CONTEST!!

From John Chadwick, Savannah, GA, USA
I dont think its fair to compare the two. One hand gave us New Order via Joy Division; our first taste of the Manchester scene to come. The other produced the most influential UK Rock N Roll band since the Beatles.

From Joe Rafferty, Stockport
Theyre both great groups in their own right.

From fifi, chapel hill, n.c usa
i say primal scream

From Christine Wagner, Germany / Bogel
That´s not easy !New Order is the Brit Pop in a genius kind, BUT OASIS is the british Rock´n´Roll and i don´t want to miss them ever . Oasis is Rok ´n´rol !

From Jacko, Manchester
Oasis without question. The biggest and most exciting band in decades, still the best live act in the world. Live Forever, Cigarettes and Alcohol? Epoch defining anthems of a generation.

From Paul Madley, Widnes
The quality of pro-New Order vs pro-Oasis comment is quite revealing... I'd vote for the genius of New Order (& Joy Division) over the low-brow Oasis any day. But we should thank Oasis at least for helping keep guitar-based pop alive, in a time when it seemed electronica would devour all. If it weren't for the likes of Oasis, the likes of the Manics, Suede, Placebo et al probably wouldn't have established themselves as they have done...

From Apri in Hungary
Oasis is Beatles for the car thieves, New Order is a creative band with original ideas. New Order, no doubt

From Barry Gibb
Hey, what about us?

From Andy Black in Manchester
it's gotta be oasis

From WRONGARTIST, manchester
NEW ORDER,NO CONTEST. JOY DIVISION REMAIN ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BANDS IN THE WORD EVER AND NEW ORDER ARE STILL AS FRESH AND COOL AS EVER. PURE CLASS.

From Anon
NEW ORDER ARE A DAMN SIGHT BETTER THEN THE OASIS WILL EVER BE.

From Steve Williams in Manchester
New Order are in a different league they set the trends There is nothing to compare. The Oasis are just beatles cover band goon show feeding a market for deprived minds.
From Billy Bradshaw in Stockport
New Order- Without a doubt. They've been around for about 25 years and acheived more than Oasis will ever acheive. I like Oasis but they're no match for New Order.
From Jonathan in Manchester
New Order changed the face of modern music, Oasis simply raided its past.
From Katie in Manchester
Oasis!
From Chris Husing in Santa Clara, CA, USA
New Order, having been Joy Division, nearly single-handedly established the entire Mancunian music scene. Without New Order, there would not have been Oasis. New Order have consistently put out great records--and even the ones that weren't are still better than the "dip" in form Oasis went through in the latter 90s...and some would say are still going through.
