Spotlight: Laura Bechtolsheimer

Let us introduce the athletes, linked with Gloucestershire, who took part in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Here we turn the spotlight on horse rider Laura Bechtolsheimer from Ampney St Peter. She faces a few quirky questions...

"If I could have chosen a voice I would have had Janice Joplin's voice."

What is the first event you remember watching?

When I was small I used to go to selections and things. My Dad was on the team so I would have watched him compete nationally and when I was really little I used to watch it everyday at home because my Dad trained Carl Hester who used to be on the team.

Who is your sport's best pundit?

There's a guy called Antonios (? Ed) and he always writes quite controversial but quite funny articles. I always like reading what he has to say.

Can you explain cricket?

No idea! There's a bat and a ball and wickets - that's about all I know, but I have no idea how it all works.

If money was no object, what would be the first thing you would buy?

A big yacht. It could follow me around on my competition schedule actually and then I could just pop to the yacht when I feel like some downtime.

Which charity do you support and why?

Unicef, my family is sort of involved with. I've also just joined Team Darfur which is athletes supporting what's going on in Darfur. It's not so much a charity so much as trying to get athletes to raise awareness.

What's your favourite biscuit?

Milk chocolate Hobnobs - I like dipping them in tea or coffee.

Can you play a musical instrument?

I used to play the saxophone but I haven't played it for years. I had lessons at school but unfortunately stopped when I left school but I don't think I was that talented to be honest.

If you could be in a band, which one would you choose?

If I could have chosen a voice I would have had Janice Joplin's voice. I'm quite into old music rather than stuff now. Little Feet - I could have been a background dancer or something...shake a tambourine!

Which two of your team mates would you want with you on a quiz team?

I think I'd go with my team - Emma (Hindle) and Jane (Gregory). Jane has quite a lot of general knowledge and Emma could argue her answer to be right anytime!

What was the last book you read?

I've just finished Maya Angelou's, 'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings'. It was quite depressing but a really good book.

If there was one rule (of dressage) or law you could change what would it be?

I think I'd like there to be more weight put on how we work in, not just how it goes on the test. It would be nice if there was a judge who watched all the working in. I also think it would be nice if a lot more attention was paid to how they present themselves and how they work and how you work with your horse in the warm-up, not just the finished product in the test.

What's the most common mistake you see people making in your sport?

Taking it too seriously, especially at lower levels - it should be fun for you and your horse. Technical mistakes are made when people tense up, they hold their breath and tense up. People forget to just relax when they're on a horse.

Where in the world is the best night out?

I like going out in London with all of my friends. I was at Bristol Uni so I love the nightlife there. Anywhere so long as I have a good group of friends with me.

Hey Laura, Just a quick note to say we are all really excited for you at this end!I'm not sure who has the worst weather as it is totally pouring down with rain here, and cloudy to boot!Dan the man says - good look mum and get home quick as i cant believe you have left me with this crazy midget person who keeps giving me baths and pulling my mane. I even heard whispers that she wants to trim my ears! HELP! The groom says - Im sure Dan 's bottom has actually reached Hippo proportions and the ears are actually getting BIGGER! Have a blast big hugs and kisses. x
