Spotlight: Beth Rodford

Let us introduce the athletes, linked with Gloucestershire, who took part in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Here we turn the spotlight on Beth Rodford who began her rowing career in Gloucester. She faces a few quirky questions...

"I just think lycra doesn't do wonders for rowers figures."

If money was no object, what would be the first thing you would buy?

Probably a new car. I drive a Ford Focus, which I love, but I'd quite like a nicer car. We just do so much driving, and I think you have to be comfortable when you're driving.

Who is your sport's best pundit?

The best rowing pundit is probably Katherine Grainger. She's a really good advert for women's sport, not only women's rowing and she always comes across really well. She's an inspiration to younger athletes so I'd choose her.

What has been your worst fashion crime?

I'd like to think I haven't had one so far. I'm sure there are many photos our there in the rowing world that I really wouldn't want published ever again - I just think lycra doesn't do wonders for rowers figures.

Which charity do you support?

I support quite a few charities. The British Heart Foundation's quite a close one for me - my Dad's always done a lot of charity work for them and I think it's followed over to me.

What's your favourite biscuit?

I'm quite a fan of Rich Tea biscuits actually - it's just an old classic isn't it?!

Who is the most famous person with your Christian name?

Is it Beth Tweddle, the gymnast? I can't think of any others.

Can you play a musical instrument?

I can play the flute. I played it when I was at school and I haven't played it since.

If you could be in a band, which one would you choose?

I don't know! Music's not my kind of thing - I'm one of those people who likes songs but has no idea who they're by or who sings them.

Which two athletes would you want with you on a quiz team?

Definitely Natasha Howard, she's full of useless information but also some really useful information and probably Jessica Eddy because she, sporting-wise, knows absolutely everything.

What was the last book you read?

'The Kite Runner' - I'm really looking forward to seeing the film actually.

Where in the world is the best night out?

Rowing-wise, the best night out has been in Giffu (Japan) after the 205 World Championships when the British Rowing Team basically took over this random little nightclub. There wasn't any locals in there, I think it was a Monday night, but it was good fun.
