Concert Information
From Berlioz’s bellicose Royal Hunt to Arthur Bliss’s choral symphony, a response to the horrors of the First World War, this blazing programme delves into violence and its aftermath across the centuries.
We are joined by foremost mezzo Sarah Connolly for Berlioz’s coruscating cantata on the death of Cleopatra. Connolly is ideally suited to take on this powerful operatic scene, in which the anguished Egyptian queen reflects on her legacy before her fatal poisoning. In Morning Heroes Bliss honoured the sacrifice of all soldiers, recalling the Trojan wars, the American Civil War and the Great War in which his own younger brother died.
