Rugby is the leading co-educational boarding school in the country. In addition to boarders, the school educates day pupils, aged 11 to 18. Lessons cover a range of areas, with everything from art to business studies and from physical education to politics.

It is an examination-entry and fee-paying school, although some scholarships and foundationerships are awarded to gifted pupils to pay all or part of the fees.

Rugby School was founded in 1567 and despite a troubled start, by 1621, the school had achieved a good reputation and its pupils were successfully continuing on to university.

In 1750 the school moved to its present site and was extended to include new schools and rooms for boarders. On its new site the school, its pupils and its progressive education ideas flourished.

Re-enactment of William Webb Ellis' first Rugby game at Rugby School
Rugby School is where the game of rugby football began, when in 1823, William Webb Ellis famously picked up a football and ran with it.

Unsurprisingly, with this heritage, the school takes the sport very seriously and excels in the game.

Amongst the past pupils from Rugby, 63 have gone on to play internationally for England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and South Africa.

The school teams are instructed by senior RFU coaches and ex-professional players and referees. Players from regional professional teams are also visiting coaches.
