The Museum of British Road Transport - or MBRT - houses the largest collection of British road transport in the world. It has been designated a collection of national importance.

The museum has 230 cars and commercial vehicles, 250 cycles and 90 motorcycles. It uses exciting and interactive displays and attracts thousands of visitors.

MBRT travels through time, telling the story of Coventry's pioneering cycles and motorcars and depicting the heady days of motoring in the 1920s and 1930s.

Visitors can also share in the city's spirit of optimism as it was rebuilt after the war and enjoyed the boom of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Finally, the museum shows visions of the future, exhibiting modern technology with the Land Speed Record holder, the ThrustSSC.

The MBRT is based in Coventry because the city is known as the place the British motor industry was born.

In 1896 the first factory to make motor cars for sale was founded in Coventry. Since then there have been 138 vehicle makers in the city.

Coventry has also had over 300 cycle manufacturers and almost 90 motorcycle builders.

In the Landmarques section of the museum, visitors can see King George VI's state car made by Daimler motor cars in the late 1940s.

This section also has some cars made by Harry Lawson, a key person in the foundation of the Coventry motor industry. In 1896 he founded the first factory in Britain to make motorcars for commercial sale.

You can now get inside the royal car with our virtual tour and sit in the place of royalty.

Visit the Icons room at the MBRT to explore car design over the years.

The first cars were built with little interest in style it was more important that they worked properly but as they developed they became more style-conscious.

Industrial designers began to work on cars in the 1930s and their ideas began to change the look of cars.

Car design has now become very complex, incorportating speed, economy, safety, style, performance, ergonomics, the environment and more.
