Dave Gorman proved he is a deliciously likeable comedian in his show based on the hit Reasons To Be Cheerful - and why he's a reason himself.

Warwick Arts Centre, on the university campus, was the perfect place to see the ever-studious Dave Gorman.

Kitted out with lecture paraphernalia - an OHP, slide projector, pointer, etc - he led the audience through a brilliantly funny show.

I thought I might quibble with Dave Gorman's super-scripted style, something that seemed proven when he seemed unusually perturbed at the late-comers.

But his reaction to this, and to hecklers, actually allowed his confident, witty and likeable personality to shine all the more.

Reasons To Be Cheerful

The show was based on Reasons To Be Cheerful, a 70s hit which lists a number of ways of making one happy, by Ian Drury.

In his analytical style, Dave Gorman took the verses, line by line, to question their validity.

The show left me enormously cheerful. Indeed, Dave, your name could be in verse 17, no argument.

At first glance many of the words seemed nonsensical, but Dave Gorman managed to make sense - and great comedy - of the lyrics.

He used his skill and creative insight to prove beyond doubt Ian Dury did in fact correctly identify many reasons to be cheerful.

The evidence

Backed up with pseudo-science and second-hand slides, Dave Gorman made a really convincing case.

The illustrations were themselves a very funny addition to the show. Selected from 60,000 second-hand slides obtained through a Loot advert, they showed great family snaps of strangers mainly in the 1960s.

The quiffs, cardigans, pets and poses on display were very funny indeed.

Genuine comedian

Despite clearly being a comedian that grafts over his material, Dave Gorman is the most 'genuine' performer I've ever seen. He really came across as a lovely bloke.

To prove this beyond any doubt, he made a cocktail for the audience, led a swap-shop session and lead a conga with the front row.

Proven funniness

One of the highlights was Dave Gorman's explanation of his "marble system".

He added marbles to a cup each time the audience laughed.

At the end of the show he weighed the cup and, on the basis of the resultant reading, was able to declare the show a success.

He also drew a graph to back-up his point, rending any chance of a refund impossible.

The audience filed (or conga'd) out of the auditorium happy - satisfied had enjoyed a good night thanks to the scientific evidence.

The show left me enormously cheerful indeed, Dave, your name could be in verse 17, no argument.
