My games round-up

There’s a lot going on because it’s nearly Xmas so here's my round up of some of the big games around at the moment, starting off with the big new blockbusters...

Call of Duty 4 (360, PS3, PC out now)

Yet another superb first-person shooter in a year of so many superb first-person shooters. No alien invasions or weird sci-fi in this one - it's gritty, realistic contemporary warfare with serious wow factor.

(rated 16+)

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii - out this Friday)

Ten years after Super Mario 64 we get the sequel it deserves. A genuine masterpiece, the best game on Wii by a mile and the best reason so far to buy the console if you haven't already. Everybody who loves videogames needs to play this. Simply brimming with inventiveness and sheer fun. An instant classic.

The Simpsons (on all platforms - out now)

It's here after all the hype and the promise. It looks magnificent, is really funny (scripted by the show's writers), sounds spot-on (thanks to using the real actors), but... it's just all a bit underwhelming in the end. An average, occasionally clumsy game tarted up with incredible production values. Simpsons fans should defo take a look - but rental is probably the best option.

Assassin's Creed (360, PS3 - out this Friday) - 15+

Another game that's been hyped to death and promises to be a landmark title. It's a stealth-action game set in medieval times; you control an assassin who has a terrific array of skills, like free running up walls and building, and the ability to lose himself in crowds. From what I've seen so far, it just about delivers.

Plus for the family:

Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Wii, 360, PS3, DS)

The Wii lightsaber game is here at last! This is basically Lego Star Wars I & II combined in the same package, with the addition of online play on 360 and PS3, and appearing for the first time on Wii, with added lightsaber swooshiness! In short - it's not worth it if you own the originals already, but if you don't it's never been more fun or charming.

Finally, I promised I'd link to a fix for a bug with Pro-Evolution Soccer 2008 on the Playstation 3 so if you've been having problems, take a look
