A personal experience of skin cancer

Description

Lynn Binnie is a nurse who works with cancer patients. She explains on holidays she attempted to get the darkest tan she could and how this made her feel better about herself. Over time, an existing mole became darker and larger. Malignant melanoma was diagnosed and successfully treated. Lynn explains although some of the patients she works with don’t feel they have been overexposed to sunlight, even one incident of sun burning or frequent work outdoors in the sun can lead to this form of cancer.

Classroom Ideas

Divide students into groups to look at different diseases prevalent in the developed world. List the physical, economic, genetic and cultural factors that contribute to each. Consider the responsibilities of individuals and state in trying to prevent these diseases and discuss if or how a balance between health education, legislation and personal lifestyle choice can be reached.
