Cancer in the developed world
Description
Cancer kills 15,000 people every year. Cancer is often related to lifestyle factors, especially diet and smoking. When the nucleus of a cell is damaged, it can become a cancer cell, creating more cancer cells that multiply and overwhelm normal cells. Skin cancer is on the increase in Scotland, with malignant melanoma being the most aggressive form. The main cause is over-exposure to sun light.
Classroom Ideas
Use as a catalyst for discussion on the lifestyle decisions that increase rates of cancer and other diseases in the developed world. Students could list the various lifestyle factors (eg diet and smoking) related to this increase and could investigate how much these factors affect different sections of society. Compare and contrast with levels of cancer and other diseases in LEDCs and investigate how rates of these increase in rapidly developing countries.
