ForgivenessCase study – Eva Mozes Kor

Judaism teaches that war is sometimes necessary in self-defence in order to bring about peace. Forgiveness is a duty, or a mitzvah in Judaism and is mentioned in the Torah. Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, is therefore one of the most important days in the Jewish calendar.

Case study – Eva Mozes Kor

Eva Mozes Kor (1934-2019) was a Holocaust survivor. She lost both of her parents, as well as her two older sisters, at the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Holocaust.

Both Eva and her twin sister, Miriam, survived the Holocaust, despite being subjected to horrifying experiences.

Eva gave many interviews about her terrible ordeal. One of the things she would often talk about was her forgiveness of the Nazis. She described her forgiveness as a way of helping her deal with her experiences.

I believe forgiveness is such a powerful thing. It is free. It works. It has no side effects. And this is what our world needs besides punishment.
