Approach: Communication drills

By calling out names as a passing drill is carried out, players are able to build positive working relationships and learn the best ways to communicate. In basketball, using hand signals at set pieces during training uses non-verbal communication and makes clear to others in the team where the ball is going to be played from or to. This approach can then be used in the ‘live’ performance situation.

Communication drillsOrganise activities where group members have to communicate verbally and non-verbally to build positive relationships. Before and after performances, build in time for regular feedback sessions where everyone has to contribute something positive about the whole performance. For example, in a small-sided, conditioned game, every player must give positive communication and feedback after every piece of play that they are involved in.
