Causes of the Cuban Missile Crisis 1962

From 1959 a crisis developed over Cuba which almost caused nuclear war in October, 1962.

Cubal Revolution 1959

On 1st January, 1959, Cuban's right-wing government led by the dictator General Batista, was overthrown. Fidel Castro took control of Cuba.

Political and economic tension rose between Cuba and the USA. Castro ordered that American-owned businesses on Cuba would be taken over. The US Government blocked trade with Cuba .

Castro support for communism

As tension between Cuba and the USA increased, Cuba established ties with the USSR and influence of communism on the Cuban Government grew.

Cuba is 90 miles from Florida. The USA became very worried about having a communist regime so close to its shores.

Bay of Pigs Disaster 1961

On 17 April, 1500 Cuban exiles trained by the CIA landed in Cuba.

The US Air Force was meant to protect the exiles. Castro’s troops defeated the Cuban exile army. By 20th April, the exiles were either dead or in prison.

Castro support from USSR

Castro feared a new attack from the USA. He looked to the USSR, who were willing to provide assistance.
