Our Mission
50:50 The Equality Project is committed to inspiring and supporting the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ and organisations around the globe to consistently create journalism and media content that fairly represents our world.
The initiative, started in the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s London newsroom in 2017, uses a methodology that is rooted in data, creativity and practicality to fundamentally shift representation across the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ’s content.
50:50 is a simple system for busy content-makers to monitor their on-air diversity data in real time. Teams input data every day or every week and then publish it internally every month. The 50:50 team analyses it to chart progress both by engagement but also increasing the number of women represented in content. It’s not monitoring workforce. Many teams also monitor their ethnicity and disability representation on air as well.

What type of diversity monitoring do we do?
The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ has teams located in the UK and around the world participating in the 50:50 Project.

Lawful Basis for processing your personal data
For Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ teams within the UK, the lawful basis on which the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ processes your personal data is for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest. The lawful basis on which the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ processes your special category data is for reasons of substantial public interest. The Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ carries out diversity monitoring to assist in meeting its public purpose obligations as set out in the Royal Charter. This requires the Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ to identify whether it is fulfilling its mission to reflect, represent and serve the diverse communities of all of the United Kingdom’s nations and regions to improve the representation of different groups in Βι¶ΉΤΌΕΔ content, and to reflect the UK to the world.
