1985: Air India jet crash

A passenger jet flying from Toronto to London disintegrated mid-air off the coast of Ireland on 23 June 1985.

The Air India plane plunged into the sea, killing all 329 people on board.

Rescue operations were co-ordinated by the coastguard in Plymouth and Falmouth, and four RAF helicopters were used to search for bodies.

It was later confirmed to have been a bomb explosion. Canadian investigators say it was planted by Sikh militants who were fighting for an independent homeland in India.
