1975: Bay City Rollers thrill Bristol kids

It's 50 years since the Bay City Rollers released their debut album and turned the world Tartan for a while.

Released on 6 September 1974, Rollin' featured perky songs such as Shang-a-Lang, Summerlove Sensation and Saturday Night that helped win the band a Tartan-clad army of young followers.

By the following year, Rollermania had truly conquered Britain's school playgrounds.

To investigate the phenomenon, Newsround Extra's John Craven travelled to Bristol where the Scottish boy band were playing a sold-out concert.

One young fan explained just why the Scottish boy band were so much better than The Osmonds, their toothy American rivals.

"They've got a tartan gimmick and the Osmonds haven't. You can't go around with the American flag around your arm because it looks stupid."
