2000: Wobbly Millennium Bridge forced to close

β€œWithin minutes, the bridge was swaying under the sheer weight of thousands of sightseers.”

The Millennium Bridge, the first new river crossing in central London for more than 100 years, is officially opened on 10 June 2000.

However, as crowds cross the bridge it begins swaying alarmingly and three days after its opening, it is closed for modifications. The bridge eventually reopened in February 2002.
