1999: Millennium celebrations

People across the UK celebrated the end of the millennium on 31 December 1999.

The scale of the celebrations ranged from large organised events to street parties to evenings at home watching events around the world.

A chain of millennium beacons was lit across the country, including in Cardiff in Wales, Cushendall in Northern Ireland, and at Ben Nevis in Scotland.

As part of the celebrations, the Β£758, Millennium Dome in Greenwich, south London, was opened by the Queen, who arrived by boat along the River Thames.
