1987: Synod says 'yes' to women priests

The Church of England’s General Synod votes in favour of allowing the ordination of women priests, in February 1987.

The synod, divided into three houses of bishops, clergy and laymen, voted in favour by a majority of 68%.

The first woman priest was ordained in Bristol in March 1994.
