1984: Oxford Circus tube fire

A tube fire broke out at Oxford Circus station on 23 November 1984.

Hundreds of people were trapped in smoke-filled tunnels for three hours. There were no deaths and only minor injuries.

The cause of the fire was thought to be an electrical fault on a train or in tunnel cabling. A later investigation into the fire criticised lax fire precautions.
