1994: Shops open on Sunday

Shops opened legally on a Sunday for the first time on 28 August 1994.

After 26 previous attempts to relax Sunday trading laws, the Sunday Trading Act allowed all stores in England and Wales to trade goods on Sundays.

The new law was opposed by the Keep Sunday Special Campaign, which feared that Sunday trading would lead to an β€œerosion of family life.”
