1968: Clashes at West Berlin student protest

A massive student rally in West Berlin ends in violent clashes between police and protesters.

Students block the city's main thoroughfare, the Kurfurstendamm, in protest at the shooting the previous week of one of their leaders, Rudi Dutschke.

Mr Dutschke had been shot three times outside the offices of the German Socialist Students Federation.

Since the assassination attempt, students have sought to hinder distribution of papers published by millionaire Axel Springer, whom they blame for inflaming public opinion against them.

Originally broadcast on 15 April 1968.
