1974: Bomb sets fire to Houses of Parliament

A bomb planted by the IRA exploded at the Houses of Parliament on 17 June, 1974.

The explosion injured 11 people and caused extensive damage to the buildings.

The bomb was suspected to have fractured a gas main, causing a fire to spread quickly to the centuries-old hall.

Liberal Chief Whip, David Steel, gave an eyewitness account of the attack.
