1994: Rwandan president's plane shot down

The presidents of Rwanda and Burundi were killed in a plane crash near the Rwandan capital, Kigali, on 6 April 1994.

Juvenal Habyarimana of Rwanda and Burundi's Cyprien Ntaryamira were among 12 people on the aircraft, which was brought down by missiles.

The two presidents were returning from a meeting of east and central African leaders in Tanzania at which they discussed ways to end the ethnic violence in Burundi and Rwanda.
