1999: Euro currency introduced

*The euro is launched as an electronic currency 1 January 1999.

The new currency was introduced in 11 member states of the European Union, including Germany, France and Ireland.

The euro was used by banks, foreign exchange dealers and stock markets. Euro coins and notes would become legal tender in 2002, with national currencies becoming obsolete.
