2001: US launches air strikes against Taliban

The US began its military campaign against al-Quaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan on 7 October 2001.

Cruise missiles and bombers targeted the airports of Kandahar and Kabul and terrorist training camps near Jalalabad as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The strikes were the first retaliatory response to the 9/11 attacks.
