A look at Shortney traditions, how to make roti and why it takes a year to get the costumes ready. Maggie Nelson speaks to some of the participants as they prepare for this year's carnival, which is taking the impact of Asian culture on the Caribbean as its theme. Although roti is East Indian in origin, it was brought to the Caribbean islands by Asian contract labourers as early as 1840 and has since been localised as a Caribbean dish. It is very popular in Trinidad, where just under half of the population consider themselves to be of East Indian background.

Originally broadcast on 26 August 1983.
