1979: Public sector strike paralyses country

Tens of thousands of public sector workers take part in a day of action - the biggest mass stoppage since 1926 - in support of a claim for more pay.

Those on strike included hospital workers, rubbish collectors, school caretakers, grave diggers and airport staff.

It was the first in a series of public sector strikes, and marked the beginning of what would become known as β€œthe winter of discontent”.

Nationwide looked behind the scenes at Kingston Hospital to see how the disruption was handled.
