New evidence calls into question the widely accepted fact that Van Gogh cut off part of his own ear.

Fresh research suggests that it was fellow artist Paul Gauguin who inflicted the injury and that the two friends entered into an agreement never to speak of the circumstances that led up to this event. Hans Kaufmann, whose book finally reveals the details of this pact, speaks to Robin Lustig.
