In this extract from the series for deaf viewers, Jeff Bown talks about how he has loved steam trains since he first sneaked out to watch them at the local station when he was eight years old. The East Somerset Railway was founded by renowned wildlife painter and conservationist David Shepherd in 1971 as a place to base the two engines (BR standard-class 9F No 92203 and standard-class 4MT No 75029) he had bought from British Rail in 1967. Shepherd was awarded the CBE in 2008 for services to conservation.
